Transformer Selling FAQ

What kinds of transformers do you buy?

Pad-mount, oil-filled, dry-type, cast-coil, substation, power, distribution, pole-mount, unit substation and network transformers, plus scrap-grade units of any class. Transformers are the only equipment we buy.

Do you buy anything besides transformers?

No. That focus is why we price transformers better than a general surplus dealer or a scrap yard.

Do I need to have the transformer tested first?

No. Testing is never required. We assess condition ourselves from photos, the nameplate and our own inspection at pickup.

Who pays for freight, rigging and removal?

We do, and it is already reflected in the offer. That includes rigging, cribbing, crane time where needed, permits, escorts, fluid handling and the haul itself.

When do I get paid?

Before the transformer leaves your property. Our offers are cash offers and are not contingent on us reselling the unit.

Is the quoted price firm?

Yes. We do not re-trade the number when the truck arrives. The only thing that changes an agreed price is discovering the unit is materially different from what was represented.

Will you buy a single transformer?

Yes. Small dry-types usually work best combined into a lot, but we buy single units routinely, and we also buy entire yards and liquidation lots as one purchase.

What if the nameplate is missing or unreadable?

Photograph the unit anyway. Tank construction, bushing arrangement, radiator style and physical dimensions let us narrow the rating, and we confirm at inspection.

What if the PCB status is unknown?

We buy it. Units with no nameplate statement and a pre-1980 build date are treated as presumed-contaminated, priced with the correct disposal path, and we tell you plainly which category we are assuming.

Should I drain the oil before you arrive?

No. Draining can create a waste-handling obligation in your name and it reduces resale value. Leave the fluid in.

Do you buy burned-out or gutted transformers?

Yes, as scrap-grade purchases priced on metal content. Do not assume that is what you have, though — units that merely look rough are frequently resale-grade.

How much is my transformer worth?

It depends on the rating, the primary and secondary voltage pair, winding material, fluid type, PCB status and condition. Send the nameplate and you will usually have a number the same day.

Do you buy transformers that are still installed?

Yes. We quote them in place and coordinate the disconnect timing with your electrician or the utility before removal.

Can you remove a unit from a basement vault or a rooftop?

Yes. Vault pulls, mezzanine units and crane picks are routine. Tell us about access and the route out so we bring the right equipment.

How fast can you pick up?

Typically one to two weeks after agreement, and faster when a demolition date or lease expiration is driving it. The utility disconnect is usually the longest lead item.

Which states do you buy in?

All 50 states and the District of Columbia. We stage freight regionally, so distance affects our scheduling rather than your price.

Are you brokers?

No. We buy with our own money and haul on our own freight. Nothing is consigned and nothing waits on a resale.

What paperwork do I get?

A bill of sale documenting the transfer. For oil-filled units that includes the PCB status basis we are relying on.
